Appropriately named, “The Big Buddy”, the Mr. Heater Big Buddy MH18B camping tent heater is the biggest brother in the Mr Heater tent heater series. It offers a scorching 18,000 BTU on its highest setting which will heat up to 400 Sq. Ft. Its lowest setting is equivalent to the standard Buddy at 4,000 BTU. It features all the unique safety features as the other Buddy tent heaters but also has a built-in blower fan to help distribute all that heat.
The Mr Heater Buddy has been my camping tent heater of choice for years, and still is to this day. What sets all the Mr Heater tent heater models apart from the other tent heater brands is their integrated safety features. The “Buddy” heater series comes in 3 models, appropriately named the, “Little Buddy“, “The Buddy“, and the “Big Buddy“. This tent heater review is on “The Buddy”, model MH9BX.
Though the Stansport Portable Outdoor Butane Heater may be an attractive option considering its low-price point and the impressive amount of heat it can produce for its modest size – there are a number of drawbacks that need to be considered before using it as a camping tent heater, and/or in cold weather
The Coleman Sportcat tent heater is the smallest and least expensive camping tent heater currently on the market. It offers the same safe, “flameless” propane powered catalytic heating technology as the other Coleman tent heater models – but with half the output power of the BlackCat and without the “InstaStart” feature that gives you match-less, “push-button” ignition. If you’re looking for a small tent heater and can live without the convenience of a built-in Piezo ignition, the Coleman Sportcat may be just the model you’re looking for.
The Coleman BlackCat InstaStart tent heater is currently the most popular small camping tent heater. It’s the same basic model as the standard BlackCat – but with the added “InstaStart” feature that allows you to easily ignite the heater with the simple click of a button (which means no matches required). Both Colman BlackCat models cost a little more than the smaller SportCat models but you get twice the heating power as well as selectable power settings.
There are 2 Coleman BlackCat tent heater models. Simply put, one has the “InstaStart” feature that gives you “push-button” ignition (opposed to needing matches) and the other does not. This tent heater review is for the BlackCat model that does not have the “InstaStart” feature. Both are excellent camping tent heater models. What really sets the Coleman BlackCat heater apart from the other models in the small tent heater class is..
The Mr Heater Little Buddy tent heater is not only the most powerful portable camping tent heater in the small tent heater class, it also offers safety features that simply are not available from the other brands. With 3,800 BTU of power, the Little Buddy can heat an area up to 100 square feet. There are a few trade-offs for that extra heating power however. See the full review here for all the details.
The Coleman Sportcat InstaStart tent heater is the same as the standard Sportcat model, but with the added “InstaStart” feature that gives you convenient “match-less” starting with the simple push of a button. As with all the current Coleman tent heater models, both Sportcat models are propane-powered catalytic style tent heaters that offer safe, flameless heating for enclosed spaces. You will pay a couple extra bucks for the InstaStart feature, but most users consider this more than worth the additional few dollars.
